  • Examining patients, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures.
  • Position patients on operating table to maximize patient comfort and surgical accessibility.
  • To decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following outpatient surgery.
  • To confer with other medical professionals to determine type and method of anaesthetic or sedation to render patient insensible to pain.
  • To prescribe for a laboratory tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures as and when necessary and also prescribe medications.
  • To maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To practice good infection control.
  • To prevent and report medical errors.
  • To practice safe sharps and biohazard handling and disposal.
  • To undergo various training both professional and administrative as deserved by the administrators.
  • To impart training of expertise including Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, interventional pain management, etc. and to participate in Continuing Medical Education Programme.
  • To supervise the functioning of the interventional pain management clinic.
  • Responsible for handling of critical care unit of the medical centre as well as day to day ICU care of the patients.
  • To provide effective, efficient and professional clinical intensive care services working through departments like radiology, pathology, bedside etc
  • Share the ICU on-call roster as determined by the needs of the medical centre. Clinical anaesthesia coverage will be shared on a pre-determined roster basis coverage by Anaesthetists. Services include anaesthesia in the Operating Suite etc.
  • Should be aware of the role of patient advocates and patient’s rights and ensure informed consent has been obtained in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Handle all patients and their care givers of all cultures with dignity and respect.
  • Function as part of a multidisciplinary team to promote high quality outcomes for patients. Consistently demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with other staff and patients and handle problems sensitively.
  • Liaise with medical staff in other departments of the hospital and in other hospitals to ensure that patients are investigated in an appropriate and cost effective manner. This commitment will include taking part in departmental meetings with other disciplines as required from time to time.
  • The Intensivist, when appropriate, will instruct, guide and supervise the work of other staff involved in Intensive care services as part of regular clinical duties.
  • Should undertake teaching of Anaesthetic Registrars, Technicians and other relevant health professionals as required.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical performance and foster the maintenance of high standards within the Anaesthetic Department.
  • The Intensivist with his/her medical colleagues will work to develop and maintain the quality assurance programme and audit programme for the Anaesthetic Department. The programme will include review of patient care, patient diagnosis and standards of treatment.
  • Should regularly review the work of the Residents and Resident Medical Officers/ GDMOs.
  • Work collaboratively toward credentialing and accreditation of clinicians as required.
  • Should attend to enquiries and complaints from patients, relatives, staff or management in an appropriate and timely manner, discussing potential problems with the Heads of Department, Medical Leader, Customer Services Manager or Business Leader as appropriate.
  • Should complete appropriate documentation requirements for administrative purposes (e.g. leave forms, claims, reports).
  • Should endeavour to keep up to date with trends and developments in the field of Intensive Care clinical service provision on an ongoing basis.
  • Should be responsible for keeping abreast of relevant literature, conferences and courses. After attendance at conferences or courses Should report back to colleagues.
